Friends Place Adult Day Services is an adult day care center dedicated to providing specialized daytime senior care for individuals with Alzheimer’s and other related dementias. Founded in 2005 in Richardson, Texas by Pam Kovacs Johnson, a health care professional with more than 30 years in the field of aging, Friends Place was created as a place for people with early or mid-stage Alzheimer’s to socialize with peers, keep their mind and body active, and remain independent in their home longer.
Friends Place provides adult day care and respite for caregivers. Our program is a cost-effective alternative to nursing home care. The cost of our adult social day care is affordable and flexible. There is a nurse on staff to monitor our members’ health and to dispense medication as indicated. By offering both a social and medical model of care, people with memory impairment can remain at home, maintain an optimal level of functioning, and delay the need for placement in a long-term care facility.

Nutrition and Dietary Services
All meals and snacks prepared on-site. Continental breakfast and morning snacks. Hot nutritional lunch served restaurant-style. Assistance with meals, prompts/cues, adaptive equipment. Supervision for those with choking precautions. Menus reviewed and approved by a licensed dietitian. Hydration program with juices and water served at least three times daily. Nutritional counseling available for families.
Health, Care, and Wellness Program
Supervised by a full-time nurse. Toileting reminders and incontinence care assistance. Assistance with transfers and ambulation. Medication reminders or administration. Blood pressure monitoring. Glucose testing. Assistance and monitoring of oxygen. Medical treatments. Weight monitoring.

At Friends Place, members enjoy structured activities, hot meals, nursing care, and time with peers, while family caregivers get time to work, rest, or run errands.
At Friends Place, adult day care costs $80 for a half day (5 hours or less) and $100 for a full day, with a one-time $65 enrollment fee. Breakfast, a hot lunch, snacks, activities, and nursing care are all included in the daily rate. Adult day care is typically far less expensive than assisted living, memory care, or in-home care.
Original Medicare generally does not cover adult day care, but other options can help. Almost all long-term care insurance policies cover Friends Place, and our staff can help you verify your benefits. Eligible veterans may attend at no cost through the VA. Yes. Friends Place Richardson and Friends Place DeSoto are contracted with the VA North Texas Health Care System, so eligible veterans can attend at no cost. A typical day at Friends Place includes group activities, exercise, music, and a hot lunch, all designed for people with memory loss. Members can enjoy trivia and word games, exercise twice daily, arts and crafts, sing-alongs, therapy dogs, and live entertainment. Breakfast and snacks are served too, and a licensed nurse is on duty every day to give medications and monitor health.
No, a formal dementia diagnosis is not required to attend Friends Place. Our programs are designed for adults with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or memory problems, and members with Parkinson’s or mild cognitive impairment also benefit. Members should be at least 50 years old and able to walk independently or with a walker, cane, or staff assistance. Wheelchairs are not permitted.
Adult day care is a daytime-only program, so your loved one comes for the day and returns home each evening. Memory care and assisted living are full-time residential options. Adult day care costs much less, lets your loved one stay in familiar surroundings, and can delay or even avoid the move to a long-term care facility.

Members can attend any five-hour period with a reservation (no drop-ins). Transportation isn’t provided, but it can often be arranged through DART Paratransit.
The first step is to schedule a tour of the Friends Place location nearest you. After the tour, you complete an enrollment application and bring your loved one for a short second visit and assessment. Then you choose a start date and reserve days for the month. We recommend starting with two to three days a week for the easiest transition.
